Most cases of neck pain is caused by sleeping awkwardly for example on their stomach with the neck twisted. The front sleeper then wakes up with neck pain which worsens through the day. The pain can be excruciating and the sufferer may be unable to turn or rotate their neck.
Underlying predisposing factors include stress, tight neck muscles, hypermobility of the cervical spine or bad choice of pillows eg they are too high.
Sometimes, neck pain can be caused by facet joint sprain and is also known as facet joint syndrome, or facet locking. Locking implies that the facet joint has become stiff or stuck ( very painful).
Signs and symptoms: stiff and painful neck, tight muscles, maybe associated with headaches and shoulder pain.
