Scoliosis is when the spine curves to the side. The spine can also twist at the same time. This twisting can pull the ribcage out of position.
Scoliosis can affect people at different stages in their lives. It can happen:
Before birth (congenital)
In young children (early onset), starting from 3 years of old
In older children and teenagers / up towards puberty
In adulthood ( posture related)
Pathologically ( spinal infection, muscular dystrophy condition, Marfan's syndrome, Cerebral Palsy)
Majority of scoliosis is idiopathic, meaning that the cause is unknown, but there are signs to which can help to identify it such as:
Rounded back
Twisted vertebrae
Different height in shoulder blades
Uneven waist
Hips are different
It is advised for back to be checked regularly by an osteopath or physiotherapist to monitor the growth development and avoid scoliosis.
The muscular pain from the scoliosis can be managed by sport massage to relax the muscles or acupuncture as well as Pilates for strengthening the back muscles.
